Empowering Home Educators: How Rika Delivered an Accessible and Innovative Careers Education Platform.

This case study explores the design, development, and impact of the Home Education Futures website, showcasing how Rika delivered a solution that exceeded expectations and made a lasting impact on the community

Home-educating parents face unique challenges when integrating careers education into their children’s learning plans. Recognising this gap, Swindon & Wiltshire Careers Hub partnered with Rika to create a dedicated website tailored to their needs.

The brief outlined a straightforward, user-friendly platform providing accessible resources, onward signposting, and case studies to support homeschooling families.

The Business challenge

The Swindon & Wiltshire Careers Hub identified a critical need within the home-education community: a lack of structured, accessible career education resources. Parents and carers homeschooling their children often struggled to find relevant, easy-to-integrate materials that could guide young people toward future pathways. The core challenge was to develop a digital platform that could effectively bridge this gap, offering comprehensive support without creating barriers to access. This meant designing a solution that was not only informative but also inherently user-friendly, open-access, and adaptable to diverse learning styles and technological needs.

Objectives

The primary objectives for the Home Education Futures platform were to:

Provide Open Access: Create a resource that required no user accounts or registration, ensuring immediate and universal availability.

Deliver Diverse, Accessible Content: Offer career education materials in various formats (videos, case studies) while strictly adhering to accessibility standards (WCAG) and maintaining simplicity.

Facilitate Seamless Integration: Enable parents to easily incorporate career education into their existing homeschooling plans.

Establish a Coherent Content Strategy: Develop a robust framework for organising existing resources and creating new content to fill identified gaps.

Strategy

Rika's strategy was built on a foundation of user-centred design, agile development, and a deep commitment to accessibility. We adopted a collaborative approach, working closely with the Swindon & Wiltshire Careers Hub to translate their vision into a highly functional and impactful digital product. Our process prioritised iterative development, continuous feedback loops, and a strong focus on empowering the client for long-term platform sustainability.

Insights

Our discovery phase revealed that home-educating parents prioritised simplicity, clear navigation, and genuine accessibility. User testing sessions consistently highlighted the need for content that was easy to digest and compatible with assistive technologies. These insights formed the rationale for the project's core design principles: a clean interface, intuitive pathways to information, and a robust commitment to WCAG compliance. We understood that for the platform to be truly impactful, it had to be effortlessly usable by everyone, regardless of their digital proficiency or specific needs.

Approach

Rika's approach was multifaceted and highly collaborative:

User-Centred & Accessible Design:
We initiated the project with extensive user testing sessions involving homeschooling parents. This iterative design process focused on refining navigation, optimising text and contrast for WCAG compliance, and ensuring alternative content formats (e.g., captioned videos, transcripts) were readily available. Accessibility was not an afterthought but a foundational pillar of the design.

Strategic Content Management:
We partnered with the client to audit, organise, and streamline existing content. Crucially, we also undertook the task of writing and editing new content to fill gaps, ensuring all information was aligned with the platform's tone and purpose, presented in clear, digestible formats.

Agile Development:
Employing an iterative development methodology, we maintained transparency through weekly stakeholder meetings, milestone-based tracking, and regular reports. This agile framework allowed for flexibility and rapid response to feedback.

Rigorous Testing and Deployment:
Before launch, the platform underwent comprehensive Quality Assurance (QA) and User Acceptance Testing (UAT), including dedicated accessibility audits. We also provided thorough training sessions to the client's staff, empowering them with the skills to manage and maintain the platform independently.

Creative theme

While not driven by a specific "creative theme" in the traditional sense, the inspiration behind the platform's aesthetic was rooted in clarity, approachability, and empowerment. The visual design aimed to be clean, inviting, and professional, reflecting the informative yet supportive nature of the content. The focus was on creating a digital space that felt welcoming and easy to navigate for parents and young people seeking guidance on career pathways.

Deliverables

  • End-to-End UX & Interaction Design: Comprehensive wireframes, prototypes, and user flows ensuring an intuitive experience.

  • Custom Website Development: A fully functional, responsive website built with custom templates and widgets tailored to the client's specific requirements.

  • Accessible Content Creation & Migration: Development of new, accessible content and migration of existing resources into the new platform, including videos with captions and transcripts.
